I called it an emergency bird week.
4:00 a.m. I couldn’t sleep and so I decided to scan the rare bird alert for Barnstable County, as ya do, and this report caught my eye: Crested Caracara, Duck Harbor.
Hmm. Google Google google, and “whoa, this bird is way off course”.
I immediately grabbed my kit, no seriously, I left for Duck Harbor by 4:45 a.m. and as soon as I got there I knew my own lenses were not going to be good enough for a printable photograph. I needed a bigger lens.

I decided to splurge and over-nighted a rental Nikon 800mm lens (thank you Lensrentals.com) and began to see what I can see about getting a print of this wayward caracara.
Side note: no one really knows why this bird is on Cape Cod. He’s way off course, by, thousands of miles. I suspect he just has a very large sense of where he wants to explore, set off north looking for snacks, and hasn’t noticed he’s all by himself yet.
But, sadly, by the end of the week I was feeling pretty defeated. Everyone else, along with me, have hundreds of far-off shots of this guy’s head boppin’ around the marsh for five days and even with my 800mm I could not get anything closer….

…until I took a gamble and walked down the fire road to sit as a last ditch effort, and I know this sounds too perfect to be true, but I’m telling you *right as I was about to leave and give up…..HE FLEW RIGHT PAST ME AND NO ONE ELSE HAS THIS SHOT*
It was amazeballs.
